Is this one for you?

Who it suits. This suits people who want to do something on the river rather than only look at it: a drop-in exercise class, a boat ride, a food competition, a free stage show. It is a weaker fit if you want one big fireworks-and-crowd event, because the programmes are spread across several parks and different days. It is also a poor choice for a Monday-to-Thursday visit, when the programmes Seoul lists are only paid boat rides.

When to go. Pick your days by programme, not by the nine-day span. The weekend of Oct 17-18 is the land weekend at Jamwon, with workouts from 10:00, the meal at 16:00 and the free stage show at 17:30. Oct 23-25 is when The Road Chef Hangang runs at Ttukseom, and on Saturday it is open 13:00-21:00. The boats run every day, so they are the easy fallback when the weather moves something else.

The Hangang River Festival is Seoul City’s seasonal programme of activities along the Han River. The autumn 2026 edition runs October 17-25, and its theme is moving, eating and resting, with workouts, a street-food competition, open-air stage shows and boat rides. KTO’s description puts it as “walking, running, or relaxing” by the river rather than a single show to watch.

The most useful thing to know is that it is not one place. The official programme list splits it by park and by day: land programmes at Jamwon Hangang Park on the first weekend, a food competition at Ttukseom on the last, and paid boat rides at Banpo throughout. Pick a programme first, then work out the venue.

What you actually do here

KTO groups the programme into three strands: challenge, culture and rest.

Challenge is the active strand. The “#Daily Workout at Hangang” (KTO’s Korean name abbreviates it as Oh-Un-Han) is three exercise sessions: rhythm training, Pound Fit with drumsticks, and a sliding-board class. “Hangang One Meal” is a meal you make without fire from ingredients that are easy to find nearby. KTO also lists a children’s “Hangang Forest Adventure” with tree climbing and a zip line, and The Road Chef Hangang, a K-street-food competition between 20 young chefs, which Seoul’s English page calls Korea’s first.

Culture is the performance strand: “ON Stage: When Stars Rise Above Hangang River”, a collaboration between young performers and musical stars; a “silent yoga” session; and “Romantic Yachting, Riding the Melody”, which KTO describes as calm water and live music in place of city noise.

Rest is the water strand: kayaks, yachts, tubesters and cruises.

The official English page did not give dates for the silent yoga or the forest adventure, so this guide does not promise them on a specific day.

The free side programmes

Two free programmes run on the festival’s dates and need no booking. The Car-Free Jamsugyo Bridge Festival closes the Jamsugyo bridge to cars every Sunday from 14:00 to 22:00 through Oct 25, with food trucks, rest areas and a different theme each week; Seoul lists Jamsugyo Bridge and Banpo Hangang Park as the venue. The Hangang Outdoor Library at Yeouido’s Multi Plaza opens on Saturdays through Oct 31, 13:00-20:00, with reading, performances, games and hands-on activities.

KTO’s overview also mentions an outdoor-library idea with performances, sunset shows on Seoraeseom island, paper-plane flying and an art-making session. Seoul’s English list gives Seoraeseom’s picnic concert as Oct 9-11, which is before this edition starts, and gives no dates for the paper planes or the art session. Treat those as unconfirmed for Oct 17-25.

Tickets, fees and booking

Seoul’s page gives these prices. Workouts and the Hangang One Meal are KRW 5,000 each. Yacht rides are KRW 20,000-31,000 per person, kayaks KRW 12,500-30,000 (weekday and weekend rates differ), the tubester KRW 25,000 for a six-person boat or KRW 32,000 for an eight-person one, and Romantic Yachting KRW 60,000 (with a 20 percent Seoul-resident discount; it includes white wine, cheese and a glass). Hi Seoul Cruise fares vary by product and were not quoted here.

For booking, the page lists urbansports.kr for the workouts and meal, hdyachtclub.com for Romantic Yachting and Naver Reservation for the tubester, and says on-site sign-up is also open for each. Those sites are in Korean. Ask the organiser at 02-120 if you need help.

Anything about a cap on numbers or a refund rule was not published in the sources I found.

Getting there without a car

For the Oct 17-18 land weekend, the nearest subway line is Line 3. Jamwon Station is about a 12-15 minute walk to Jamwon Hangang Park, per Seoul’s Hangang parks directions and a second route guide; Sinsa and Apgujeong stations are 15-20 minutes. I did not find how far the multi-purpose sports field is from the park’s entrance, so leave extra time for the first visit.

For later programmes, switch parks: Ttukseom for The Road Chef Hangang, Banpo for the boats, Yeouido for the cruise. Seoul also promotes arriving by Hangang Bus, the river bus, and points to hgbus.co.kr for its routes and stops. This guide has not verified the timetable or which pier suits which programme.

Parking and shuttle details were not found. If you drive, check the venue park’s notice rather than assuming street parking.

Weather and the weekday gap

Two things shape a visit more than anything else.

First, the dates matter more than the nine-day span suggests. Of the programmes Seoul lists with dates, Monday Oct 19 to Thursday Oct 22 have only the paid boat rides at Banpo. The land programmes sit on the weekends. An independent travel blog reaches the same conclusion, and it also notes that every bookable boat programme takes walk-ups. A weekday visit can still work, but it is a boat visit.

Second, plans move with the weather. Seoul’s page says programmes can change due to weather or circumstances, and the summer edition shows it: official notices changed week 2 for heat and changed Aug 15-16 on a rain forecast. Water programmes also depend on water level and safety. Check the notice board before leaving, then check again.

Food on site and nearby

Two programmes are about food. The Road Chef Hangang is a competition, with 20 young chefs, and Seoul says admission is free with food bought separately. Prices, menus and payment methods were not published, so I can’t say what a plate costs or whether cards are taken. The Hangang One Meal, at KRW 5,000, is a cooking activity in which you make something to eat; the portion and ingredients were not listed.

Honest assessment

The strength is range at low cost. For KRW 5,000 you can join a group workout beside the river, and the stage show and the Car-Free Jamsugyo Sundays are free. The food competition is free to enter. Jamwon is on subway Line 3, so the first weekend does not need a car.

The weakness is fragmentation. Different parks and days, a KTO English record that names the wrong park, a Korean-first booking process, and a four-day weekday stretch where only boats run. Anyone expecting a single fireworks night or one festival ground will be disappointed.

Plan around two weekends: Oct 17-18 at Jamwon for the active programme, and Oct 23-25 at Ttukseom for the food. Book the paid sessions you care about, bring a layer for the evenings, and read the notice board the morning of. The official site also offers an English leaflet download, which is worth opening before you pick a day.

Questions worth asking

Is the autumn 2026 Hangang River Festival free?

Getting in is free and several programmes are free, including the ON Stage show and The Road Chef Hangang admission. Others cost money: the workout classes and Hangang One Meal are KRW 5,000 each, and the Banpo boat programmes range from about KRW 12,500 to KRW 60,000 according to Seoul City's English programme page.

Where is it held?

In several places along the river. Seoul lists the Oct 17-18 workouts, meal and ON Stage at the multi-purpose sports field in Jamwon Hangang Park, The Road Chef Hangang at the Ttukseom Hangang Park swimming pool on Oct 23-25, boat programmes at Banpo Hangang Park, and the Hi Seoul Cruise at Yeouido. KTO's English record names Jamsil, which appears to be left over from the summer edition.

Can I just turn up on a weekday?

Between Monday Oct 19 and Thursday Oct 22, the programmes Seoul lists with dates are the paid boat rides at Banpo (yacht, kayak, tubester, and Romantic Yachting except on Monday). The land programmes in the official list fall on the weekends. Programmes whose dates the official page did not list could not be checked.

Do I need to book?

Seoul's page lists urbansports.kr for advance booking of the workouts and the Hangang One Meal, with on-site entry also possible. It lists Naver Reservation and hdyachtclub.com (both Korean) for some boat programmes, also with on-site entry. Capacity limits were not published, so book ahead if a session matters to you.

What if it rains?

Seoul's page says all programmes can change with the weather or circumstances. This is not a hypothetical: the summer edition's second week was changed because of heat, and its Aug 15-16 programme was changed on a rain forecast. Check the festival's notice board on the day, especially for boat programmes.
