Is this one for you?

Who it suits. This suits people who want to buy or eat pine mushrooms where they are grown and who enjoy a market-and-stage festival beside a river, with hanwoo tasting and an evening concert. It is a weak choice if you want a quiet cultural programme or an easy rail day trip from Seoul, because the draw is shopping, food queues and pop-and-trot concerts, and the Seoul connection is not straightforward. Anyone who dislikes crowds should note that the 2025 edition drew roughly 100,000 visitors over four days.

When to go. Come early in the day if you want the ramen, since it is capped at 1,000 bowls a day and the 2025 edition saw lines each morning and frequent early sellouts. Plan the evening for the stage: one local report gives a 19:00 start for the nightly concerts and a drone show and fireworks at 21:00 on October 18, but other outlets do not repeat those times, so confirm them. The auction and tasting sessions run three times a day at times we could not confirm; the daily timetable on the official page is posted as images, so check it before building a tight route around them.

Bonghwa County, in the mountains of northern Gyeongbuk, sells itself as a pine mushroom town, and this four-day event is where that becomes a market. KTO dates the festival’s start to 1997, and 2026 is billed as the 30th edition under the slogan “30 years of deep fragrance, colouring Bonghwa”. It runs October 15-18, 2026 along the Naeseongcheon stream in Bonghwa-eup, with KTO listing opening hours of 10:00-22:00. One caution on the address: the street address in KTO’s record, 13 Naeseong-ro 5-gil, belongs to the organising foundation’s office, so use the stream area, not that address, when you navigate.

The 2026 pitch is a change of tone. For years pine mushrooms were an expensive thing to look at; Korean press this week describes the festival as lowering the barrier by selling mushrooms in 100-200 g units and putting a 5,000 won pine mushroom ramen at its centre. Status check, October 12: we found no postponement, cancellation or date change. News1 reported on October 6 that the county said the festival would go ahead as planned despite a poor mushroom harvest (see the food section below). The organiser’s page now carries the 2026 timetables as images, which we could not read as text, so everything below comes from KTO, the county and press coverage, and each gap is marked.

What you actually do here

Think of a riverside market with a stage, in four zones that Korean press describes consistently. The Pine Mushroom and Hanwoo Square has 20 booths run directly by producers, a hanyak-woo (herbal-medicine beef) sales and promotion hall and restaurants. The Naeseongcheon Food Lounge is where the ramen is cooked, with 20 self-service cooking stations, a 200-seat riverside seating area with a large LED screen, and traditional liquor. The Bonghwa Treasure Market holds regional produce, processed foods, traditional-liquor tastings and craft experiences. The Pine Mushroom Scent Stage hosts the evening performances. Reports also describe a 60 m approach path over the Sewol Bridge, called the “Seoreunae Forest Path”, lined with a 30-year history exhibition and photo spots.

The food is the reason to come. You can buy a mushroom in 100-200 g units, sit down to a ramen you cook yourself, taste free hanwoo bulgogi, and if you buy beef, have it grilled at a nearby restaurant. A “pine mushroom tavern” and a food-truck zone are listed too. The programme also includes a pine mushroom golden-bell quiz, a contest called “Beat the Pine Mushroom”, pine mushroom karaoke and a 500-serving bibimbap performance, though the exact days and times of those were not published.

Programme and timetable

The fixed points are the evenings. Press reports of September 29-30 list: October 15, opening night, Kim Na-young, Lil Boi, Byun Jin-sub (변진섭) and Baek Ji-young; October 16, Hong Jin-young and Nam Seung-min at the “Bonghwa Shining Stars Concert Season 3”; October 17, the 2nd Bonghwa Global Song Festival, a singing contest for multicultural families and foreign residents with Jang Han-byul (장한별) and Jung Hye-rin (정혜린) as guests; October 18, Cheon Rok-dam, Ha-ru, Kim So-yeon and Jeon Yu-jin, ending with a drone light show and fireworks. Only one report we checked, FT Sports on October 8, gives times: concerts at 19:00 each night, and on October 18 a drone show and fireworks from 21:00 for about 15 minutes. Other outlets say only that the shows follow after dark, so treat 19:00 and 21:00 as likely rather than certain and check the official timetable.

Daytime programmes repeat. The “One Mushroom Time Auction”, in which visitors bid on a single premium pine mushroom, runs three times a day for 15-20 minutes each; the free hanyak-woo bulgogi tasting also runs three times a day. The 43rd Cheongnyang Culture Festival runs over the same dates, with rope tug-of-war, a national classical-poetry contest, a peddlers’ performance, calligraphy and photo exhibitions, archery and craft experiences, as listed in Korean press. A warning on the official page: its programme text still shows 2025 dates (the golden-bell quiz on a Saturday, the bibimbap performance on a Thursday), which do not match 2026. The 2026 timetables are posted on a separate schedule page, but only as images, so we could not confirm the days. Do not plan around the 2025 dates.

Tickets, fees and booking

There is no gate ticket. KTO lists admission as free, with a note that activities may charge, and a local news feature agrees. The costs you will actually meet are food and produce. The ramen is 5,000 won a bowl, and the 2025 edition’s ramen was widely described as the best-value item with lines and early sellouts, so a cap of 1,000 bowls a day is a real constraint. Mushroom prices for the 100-200 g units were not published; pine mushroom prices vary with grade and the harvest, so ask at the booth before you buy. Paying by card could not be checked, so bring cash as well.

For anything not listed here, the contact is the Bonghwa Festival and Tourism Foundation, 054-674-3053, which KTO also gives as the organiser’s number.

Getting there without a car

This is the weakest part of the guide, because no source I found gave a confirmed timetable. What is established: Bonghwa Station sits on the Yeongdong Line in Bonghwa-eup, and all Mugunghwa trains stop there. From Seoul, route planners show a trip with a change at Yeongju (about 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours 5 minutes in the two route-planner readings found, not verified against Korail). The Dong Seoul Terminal timetable listing has no Bonghwa departures, and a route planner states there is no direct bus from Seoul. This guide did not confirm which terminal serves Bonghwa from Seoul, or whether anything runs in the evening.

The walking distance could not be confirmed from the station to the festival ground, only that both are in Bonghwa-eup. Plan on checking it in a Korean map app. By car, a route planner gives 212 km and about 2 hours 39 minutes without traffic, which will not apply on a festival weekend.

Parking, shuttles and traffic control

One local report (FT Sports, October 8) lists four temporary car parks around the site: P1 on the Naeseong urban-development land, P2 west of Songan Bridge on the Naeseongcheon, P3 behind the Bonghwa Junior Chamber building and P4 at the former water park. No other outlet we checked repeats this, so treat the list as unconfirmed. We found no shuttle timetable and no road-closure notice, and the organiser’s venue map is an image we could not read. Do not use last year’s arrangements: ring 054-674-3053 or open the official page shortly before you go. The same report advises warm clothing and comfortable shoes because the temperature drops quickly after sunset. The festival sits along a stream in the town centre and the 2025 edition had roughly 100,000 visitors over four days, according to Maeil Shinmun, so expect the town to be busy, especially on the weekend of October 17-18.

Day trip or overnight

Neither can be recommended with confidence. A day trip from Seoul depends on a return connection I could not verify, and the best part of the programme, the evening stage, finishes late. No accommodation was checked and no hotel is recommended here. If you decide to stay, look for a room in Bonghwa-eup itself rather than commuting from Yeongju, and book early on the 17th, when the weekend crowd arrives. The county’s tourism page lists other sights such as the Cheongnyangsan Sky Bridge and the Baekdudaegan National Arboretum; confirm their distances and opening hours before adding any to the trip.

Food on site and nearby

The food is the programme. Beyond the ramen, tavern and food trucks, the hanyak-woo hall offers free bulgogi tasting three times a day, and press says you can buy beef and have it grilled at a nearby restaurant. Pine mushroom is the point, and the county says the mushroom grows in clean mountain forest above 600 m; Maeil Shinmun’s 2025 report adds that the Bonghwa mushrooms grow under Taebaek mountain in granite soil. A pine mushroom has a strong scent and a firm texture, and a small piece in broth or grilled is how most Korean visitors eat it. Vegetarian choices, allergens and card payment could not be checked, so ask at the stall.

This year’s harvest is poor. News1 reported on October 6 that early auction volume was down about 84% on last year and that mushrooms had fetched about 1.71 million won per kilogram, above last year’s peak price. A county official told the paper the supply for the festival was secured and the event would run as planned, but the per-gram prices for the 100-200 g units were still unpublished. Expect mushrooms to cost more than in earlier years, and treat the 5,000 won ramen and the free beef tasting as the budget options.

Honest assessment

This festival is worth the effort if pine mushrooms or Korean regional food interest you, and not if you want a cultural performance festival. Its strength is that the product is the point: producers sell directly, and the entry price for a taste is low (5,000 won ramen, free beef tasting, 100-200 g mushrooms). The 2026 changes sound sensible and the evening line-ups are named in advance.

Its weaknesses are practical. Getting there from Seoul without a car looks slow and unconfirmed, the organiser’s timetable is only posted as images, the mushroom harvest is poor and pricey this year, and the ramen sells out. The concerts are mainstream Korean acts, and whether any English information is available on site could not be checked. Go in the morning for the food, stay for one evening show if you can solve the return trip, and ring the foundation if parking or a shuttle matters to your plan.

Local specialties to try

Bonghwa pine mushroom (songi) (봉화송이)

Bonghwa County registered its pine mushroom as a geographical indication with the Korea Forest Service (no. 10, January 2007) and it won the pine-mushroom category of the 2007 Korea Representative Brand award, according to Maeil Shinmun's 2007 report. Pine mushrooms cannot be farmed and are gathered wild in autumn; Bonghwa, Uljin and Yangyang are the three best-known producing areas. The festival is built around the mushroom, so this is both the local specialty and the event's subject.

Bonghwa herbal-medicine beef (hanyak-woo) (봉화한약우)

Hanwoo cattle raised in Bonghwa on feed mixed with a herbal-medicine-based probiotic developed by the county and the Gyeongbuk livestock institute, per a 2017 Hankook Ilbo report. It was named an Excellent Livestock Brand for 2022. The festival sets up a beef sales and promotion hall with free bulgogi tasting three times a day, but the illustration is a generic grilled hanwoo plate, not a photograph of local product.

Questions worth asking

Is the Bonghwa Pine Mushroom Festival free?

Yes, general entry is free; KTO adds that some activities may carry a separate charge. Food and produce are paid: pine mushroom ramen is 5,000 won a bowl, and pine mushrooms are sold in 100-200 g units. The hanwoo bulgogi tasting is free, three times a day. A price list for mushrooms and add-on activities had not been published when this guide was written.

Who is performing at the 2026 Bonghwa Pine Mushroom Festival?

Press reports of September 29-30 give one line-up per night on the pine mushroom scent stage. October 15: Kim Na-young, Lil Boi, Byun Jin-sub and Baek Ji-young. October 16: Hong Jin-young and Nam Seung-min. October 17: the 2nd Bonghwa Global Song Festival, in which multicultural families and foreign residents compete, with Jang Han-byul and Jung Hye-rin as guest singers. October 18: Cheon Rok-dam, Ha-ru, Kim So-yeon and Jeon Yu-jin, then a drone light show and fireworks. One report (FT Sports, October 8) gives 19:00 as the nightly concert start and 21:00 for roughly 15 minutes of drones and fireworks on October 18; no other source checked gives times, so treat them as likely rather than certain.

What is the 5,000 won pine mushroom ramen?

A cook-it-yourself bowl served at the Naeseongcheon Food Lounge, which has 20 cooking stations and a 200-seat riverside dining area. Reports say 1,000 bowls are sold each day on a first-come basis, and that it runs from 10:00 to 20:00. The official page's older text gives 19:00 and says it closes early when ingredients run out, so go before the evening.

Can I buy a small amount of pine mushroom?

In 2026 the festival is selling mushrooms in 100-200 g units, a change meant to lower the entry price, from 20 producer-run booths. A 'One Mushroom Time Auction', held three times a day for 15-20 minutes each, lets visitors bid on a single premium mushroom. The 2026 per-gram prices were not published.

Where do I park, and is there a shuttle?

One local report (FT Sports, October 8) lists four temporary car parks around the site: P1 on the Naeseong urban-development land, P2 west of Songan Bridge on the Naeseongcheon, P3 behind the Bonghwa Junior Chamber building, and P4 at the former water park. We could not confirm this against a second source, and we found no shuttle timetable or road-closure notice. The organiser's venue-map page is an image we could not read. Phone the foundation on 054-674-3053 before you go.

Will there be enough pine mushrooms this year, and what will they cost?

The harvest is poor. News1 reported on October 6 that early auction volume was down about 84% on last year and that top-grade mushrooms were fetching about 1.71 million won per kilogram, while the county said it had secured the supply it needs and the festival would go ahead as planned. Festival prices for the 100-200 g units had not been published, so expect them to be high and ask at the booth.

Can I visit from Seoul in a day?

This guide cannot say. A route planner shows no direct Seoul-Bonghwa bus and a rail trip with a change at Yeongju, and no timetable was verified, so work out a confirmed return before committing. Driving is about 212 km.

What else is on at the same time?

The 43rd Cheongnyang Culture Festival runs at the same time, with a rope tug-of-war, a national classical-poetry contest, a peddlers' performance and exhibitions, according to Korean press. The festival also lists a large bibimbap performance for 500 servings, a pine mushroom golden-bell quiz, pine mushroom karaoke and a county ssireum wrestling contest; dates for those had not been published.
