Chilgok Nakdong River Peace Festival 2026

The essentials first: whether it is open, what it costs, how hard it is to reach and what to expect if you do not speak Korean.

Is this one for you?

Who it suits. This suits visitors who want a festival built around the Korean War's Nakdong River defence line, with a long walk over a floating bridge, military equipment you can climb on, and ceremonies that include veterans, plus one large evening concert with a fireworks finish. It is a weaker choice if you want a quiet or purely culinary outing, or if you need English explanation, since none was confirmed. Families with children have dedicated play zones, but anyone uneasy around military displays and crowds should weigh that the whole theme is wartime history.

When to go. Friday, October 16 is the day with the most fixed events: the Black Eagles air show at 14:00, the joint opening ceremony at 18:00, the opening concert at 19:00 and fireworks at 21:00. Arrive by early afternoon so the air show and the bridge walk both fit before dark, then stay for the evening. The October 18 timetable was not published in text, so check the official site if the closing concert is your reason to go.

The Chilgok Nakdong River Peace Festival remembers the fighting along the Nakdong River in 1950, when this stretch of Chilgok County was part of the last defensive line of the Korean War. The 13th edition runs October 15-18, 2026, with its main grounds at Chilgokbo Ecological Park on the river in Seokjeok-eup. Its slogan this year is So-nyeon, so-nyeon-byeong-i doeda (our translation: boys who became boy soldiers), and the organisers say the programme is meant to bring forward the young recruits who were overshadowed by the better-known student-soldier story.

It is organised by the Chilgok Culture and Tourism Foundation together with the Army Second Operations Command, and it overlaps with the 17th Nakdong River District Battle Victory Commemoration (October 16-18), which the Army announced as a joint event with Chilgok County. That pairing explains why the programme reads as part festival and part ceremony. This guide was written on opening day, so anything marked as unpublished simply had not appeared in text by then.

What you actually do here

The thread that runs through the site is the river itself. KTO’s listing describes a Nakdong defence-line theme park, a 430-metre floating bridge crossing, a boy-soldier memorial rest zone with a craft activity, and a tour programme that uses an AI-based system. Press coverage adds an exhibition called “Into the Waegwan Iron Bridge” with photographs and video from the battle, and water-leisure activities in an area called Nakdong Island.

The military element is hands-on. Reports list static displays of army equipment (helicopters, tanks, self-propelled howitzers), armoured-vehicle rides, MILES laser-tag gear, a mock shooting experience and a mine-detector demonstration. Children get their own zones, named “Little Peace Guards” and a patriotic playground, plus a chance to try on military uniforms. These are listed activities, not a booked itinerary, so expect to choose among them on the day.

The festival has a smart-wristband system. Organisers say a QR-coded wristband gives access to the venue’s services, live parking availability, activity sign-ups and food ordering from a phone. The Peace Stage is an exception: it is first-come entry without a wristband. How you collect a wristband, and whether it costs anything, was not stated.

Programme and timetable

The listed daily opening hours are 10:00-22:00. The fixed events published so far (sources: Sidae Ilbo and SL News press timetable; Kookbang for the Army’s own events) are:

  • Thursday, October 15: 14:00 a traditional-arts showcase; 17:00 the Nakdong Arirang festival; 19:00 a “find a Chilgok star” community show with Jang Min-ho and Solji.
  • Friday, October 16: 13:00 military culture performance; 14:00 Black Eagles air show; 18:00 joint opening ceremony; 19:00 opening concert with 10CM, Baek Ji-young, Ha Dong-gyun and Seodo Band; 21:00 fireworks.
  • Saturday, October 17: 18:00 Peace Music Festival. The festival’s own notice says one act was swapped, so Lee Chang-sub no longer appears and Seomoon Tak’s band takes that slot. Lee Eun-mi is also on the bill.
  • Sunday, October 18: the Chilgok Harmony Concert closes the festival; Korean press names Enoch as a guest singer. No clock times were published in text.

The Army’s announcement for the paired victory event adds a memorial ceremony for Hill 303 at the Korea-US Friendship Park on its first day, a victory ceremony with around a hundred veterans, a Korean War photo exhibition, a children’s peace song contest and a “Hoguk Road” parade. It did not give times for those, so treat them as listed rather than scheduled. A drone show is also listed without a date.

Alongside, the 205 Chilgok Cultural Street Festa runs October 17-18 in central Waegwan, at Jungang-ro 8-gil 10 according to the festival’s directions page. That is a different place from the main grounds, so decide in advance which you are going to.

Tickets, fees and booking

KTO lists the festival as free, with sales and some experience programmes charged. In practice that means walking in, seeing the stages and exhibitions, and crossing the bridge should not need a ticket, but a paid activity could. The prices, booking method and capacity of those paid items were not published in a form that could be read, so this guide does not quote any.

The Peace Stage is first-come, and a wristband is not needed for it. If one of the paid military experiences or a food order is what you are coming for, call the organiser on 054-979-3215 or ask at the information point rather than assuming the price. Last year, organisers say, the festival drew roughly 400,000 visitors, which is a reason to expect queues for popular activities.

Getting there without a car

The practical route from Seoul is a direct ITX-Saemaeul from Seoul Station to Waegwan Station, about three hours according to journey planners. Timetable listings show ITX-Saemaeul, ITX-Maeum and Mugunghwa services stopping at Waegwan, but no KTX. Journey planners also show a faster combination via Dongdaegu, about two hours forty minutes, which means changing trains. Verify the exact services for your date in Korail, since this guide did not query Korail directly.

The station is in Waegwan, the county seat. The main grounds, Chilgokbo Ecological Park, are on the river in Seokjeok-eup, and the distance and the transport between the two were not verified. A taxi is the simplest assumption. If you want a shuttle, check the 2026 map on cnpf.kr first, since that is where it will be.

Parking, shuttles and traffic control

The official directions page contains a parking map and a shuttle map, but both are posted as images and could not be read. This guide therefore does not name a 2026 lot, a shuttle stop or a timetable. For orientation only: in 2025 the festival ran shuttle buses from pickup points around the county on its last two days and closed roads in the Yakmok-myeon area. Those details belong to last year and may well have changed.

If you drive, the wristband system is the one thing organisers highlight for parking, because it shows live availability on a phone. Open the official site shortly before you leave and follow the 2026 map instead of navigating straight to the address, 552 Jungji-ri, Seokjeok-eup. Expect the busiest period around the Friday evening headline concert and fireworks, since the 18:00, 19:00 and 21:00 events fall within three hours of each other.

Day trip or overnight

A Seoul day trip is possible but awkward. Three hours each way leaves a short window, and the main evening events on the 16th run until the 21:00 fireworks. This guide did not verify a last train out of Waegwan, so look up your exact return before booking the outbound leg.

If you want the concert and fireworks, an overnight stay near Waegwan or in Daegu is the safer structure. Availability and prices were not checked, so no specific hotel is recommended. If the air show and the bridge are your priorities, a daytime visit on October 16 covers both and can still end before the evening crowd peaks.

Food on site and nearby

Press reports list a Chilgok Food Zone of local restaurants, a “honey beer” pub using Chilgok honey, a Bundo sausage pub and a Chilgok Farmers Market. KTO’s record also mentions a food programme with restaurants from the countries that took part in the UN force. Stall menus, prices, vegetarian options and payment methods were not available, and card acceptance was not checked, so bring some cash as a precaution.

For something local away from the festival, the county’s best-known products are acacia honey and a melon grown with bee pollination, both described in the specialty section above. They are regional products, not a statement about what the stalls will sell.

Honest assessment

The festival is strongest where the setting does the explaining. Walking a floating bridge across the river that was once a front line, with the memorial exhibits and veterans’ ceremonies close by, gives the event more weight than a generic concert festival. The Friday timetable is clear and unusually specific for a regional event, and entry is free.

Its weaknesses are practical. The transfer from the station to the grounds, the shuttle, the parking lots and the paid-activity prices were not available in a readable form on opening day, and the October 18 timetable has no times yet. Nothing in the sources said English-language explanation exists, so do not assume it. The subject is wartime history presented through hands-on military displays and large crowds, which is a deliberate choice rather than a flaw but will not suit everyone.

Aim for Friday afternoon if you can, check the official site the morning you travel for shuttle, parking and any lineup change, and keep your evening plan flexible around the 21:00 fireworks. For a weekend concert, do not assume the lineup printed in older press holds; the festival has already changed one October 17 act.

Local specialties to try

Chilgok acacia honey (칠곡 아까시꿀)

Local press describes naturally matured acacia honey, produced from roughly 1,540 hectares of acacia groves, as the county's representative specialty. The festival's honey-beer pub is also described as using Chilgok honey. This is a county product, not a promise about what any stall will sell.

Questions worth asking

What time is the Black Eagles air show at the 2026 Chilgok Peace Festival?

The published timetable puts the Black Eagles air show on Friday, October 16 at 14:00, after a military culture performance at 13:00. The announcement does not say what happens in bad weather, so check the festival's notices on the day.

Is the Chilgok Nakdong River Peace Festival free?

KTO's Korean listing gives the festival as free, with sales and some experience programmes charged. Prices for those paid activities were not available in readable form on October 15. The Peace Stage, the main concert area, is first-come entry without a wristband.

How do I get to the festival from Seoul without a car?

Direct ITX-Saemaeul trains run from Seoul Station to Waegwan Station in roughly three hours, and journey planners also show a route via Dongdaegu in about two hours forty. The festival grounds at Chilgokbo Ecological Park are a separate local transfer from the station. The official directions page carries shuttle and parking maps as images, so check it before you leave.

Is there a festival shuttle and where do I park?

The festival's directions page has a parking map and a shuttle map, but both are images and the details were not readable in text. Its wristband system also shows live parking availability on a phone. Do not rely on last year's lots or shuttle stops; use the 2026 maps on cnpf.kr.

Can I do the festival as a day trip from Seoul?

The train takes about three hours each way, and the fixed evening events on October 16 run from 18:00 to the 21:00 fireworks. A same-day return would be tight after those. This guide did not verify a last departure from Waegwan, so look up the exact return train in Korail before deciding.

What is the 205 Chilgok Cultural Street Festa?

It is a companion street event on October 17-18 in central Waegwan, listed at Jungang-ro 8-gil 10, Waegwan-eup, which is a different place from the main grounds at Chilgokbo Ecological Park. Its own programme was not published in detail.
