Gochang Moyang Fortress Festival is a five-day history festival built around the town’s walled fortress, Gochangeupseong, also called Moyangseong. According to the national heritage listing and press coverage, the fortress was built in 1453, and its wall is about 1,684 m around and roughly 4 to 6 m high. The Korea Tourism Organization says the festival has run since 1973. The 2026 edition is the 53rd.
The confirmed dates are October 15-19, 2026, which is Thursday to Monday. KTO’s Korean listing, registered by Gochang County, gives the address as 11 Moyangseong-ro in Gochang-eup, free entry and operating hours of 10:00-22:00. The official site and the press agree on the dates. The photographs in this guide are from the 2025 edition, which is stated in each credit; they show the general scene, not the 2026 programme.

What you actually do here
The core activity is dapseongnori, literally walking the fortress. KTO describes the legend behind it: carry a stone on your head and walk around the wall, and one lap cures leg ailments, two bring a long healthy life and three lead to paradise. The local press ties it to the custom of women circling the wall on Jungyangjeol, the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. The festival turns that into an activity for visitors, with versions for students, for three generations of a family and for couples, plus a night version with Korean paper lanterns. I could not confirm whether stones are handed out to visitors, so treat that part as a story and not a promise.
Around the walk sit the other main programmes. KTO’s Korean listing names a ganggangsullae circle-dance event called Dal BAM, a street parade and a programme called Returns 1453 that is set inside the fortress, which matches the year it was built. The listing also names a flea market, drone show, family zone, food booths, a farm-direct market and a tavern, plus children’s and traditional-game experiences. The festival is not confined to the fortress: the press names the Gochang Flower Garden and the Traditional Arts Experience Village as additional venues.

Programme and timetable
Only a few items have dates in the sources I could check, so this section keeps to those.
- Thursday 15 October, opening day: a street parade called Colorful Gochang, with about 1,000 residents from Gochang’s 14 districts. Reports also describe a lantern night walk with flash mobs and a ganggangsullae-based Dal BAM Dance in the evening.
- Friday 16 October, 19:30: a drone light show of about 1,000 drones, themed on history and the future.
- Saturday 17 October, 16:00: the Black Eagles, the Korean Air Force aerobatic team.
- 15-19 October: daily dapseongnori with different groups of participants, and a staged re-enactment of the Joseon civil service exam, a gaming-style discovery programme and a maze-escape experience mentioned in press coverage. One outlet gives a 14:00 start for the exam; the others do not, so confirm it.
The official programme page also lists a K-POP random play dance, a wish-lantern event, a farming-music (nongak) programme, a ganggangsullae contest and a Cultural Healing Festival. Different outlets put the large daytime walk on different days, so I have not assigned it a date. Pick the day around the drone show or the air show and check the notice board for the rest.

Tickets, fees and booking
Admission is free and no ticket is needed to enter the festival area. Fees for experience programmes, the tavern and food booths are a separate question. The official site has a food-booth price list, but it did not render in text, and no 2026 experience price was found. Do not plan around figures from an earlier year.
If you need a firm answer before travelling, call the organiser, Gochang County, at 063-560-2949. KTO lists the same number for general enquiries. There is no booking system for the free programmes, and I found no reserved-viewing product for the drone show or the air show.

Getting there without a car
The leg I could check is the Seoul bus. Express buses run from Seoul’s Central City (Honam) terminal to Gochang Culture Terminal in Gochang-eup, at 191 Jungang-ro. Two independent timetable listings agree on about 3 hours 10 minutes, a first bus around 07:05 and a last around 19:30. They disagree on fares and on whether there are 14 or 16 departures a day, so check the current fare and timetable on the express bus booking site.
The fortress and the terminal are both in Gochang-eup, but I did not verify the distance, the walking time or any local bus route between them. A taxi is the safe fallback, and the official site’s directions page is worth opening before you go. I did not research a train or a car route.

Parking, shuttles and traffic control
The official site has pages for a shuttle bus guide, a venue map and directions, but their content could not be read in text. As a result, the 2026 parking lots, shuttle stops, intervals and any road closures around the fortress are unverified here.
One shuttle is confirmed from press. Gochang County says it will run buses between the fortress venue and the Gochang Flower Garden during its Autumn Picnic on 16-18 October, but the route and times were not given. If you drive, check the official shuttle page before you leave and do not assume you can park beside the fortress on the busy days.

Day trip or overnight
A day trip is technically possible, but it fits the programme poorly. The bus takes about three hours each way, and one timetable site lists the last bus back to Seoul at 19:00, which is before the 22:00 end of the festival hours and before the evening highlights. I did not find a second source for that return time, so check it yourself. Taking the first bus around 07:05 would put you in Gochang in the morning, but you would still need to leave in the early evening.
If the drone show on the 16th is your reason to come, plan to stay in Gochang that night. I did not research accommodation, so no hotel or area is recommended, and I am not claiming a particular price range. The festival also runs through Monday 19 October, which may suit a weekend that continues past Sunday.
Food on site and nearby
The official programme lists food booths, a farm-direct market and a tavern (jumak), but the 2026 menus and prices are unconfirmed. Do not assume vegetarian or other special options exist.
For something documented outside the festival, Gochang is known for pungcheon eel. The Digital Gochang Encyclopedia explains that pungcheon describes a river mouth where sea tide meets fresh water, and KTO files its eel photos under Gochang specialties. Grilled eel in lettuce wraps is the usual way to eat it. Bokbunja, the Korean black raspberry, is the county’s other flagship product. It is mostly sold as wine and processed goods. These are regional specialties, not a statement about what the festival stalls will sell.
Flower garden side trip
Gochang County is running Gochang Flower Garden Autumn Picnic, Olle on 16-18 October, timed to the festival. The garden covers roughly 8.5 hectares, and the press says about 20 kinds of autumn flowers, including zinnias, cosmos, chrysanthemums and salvia, were in bloom in early October. Listed activities include gardening and wreath-making workshops, flower tea, face painting, busking and a pet-walking programme. A festival shuttle is said to connect the garden with the fortress, but I have no schedule for it. Flowering in a given week depends on the weather, so treat the early-October report as a snapshot.
Honest assessment
The strength of this festival is the setting. Walking an intact fortress wall that is more than 570 years old is the main event, and you do not need to pay for it. The parade, the drone show and the air show add dated highlights on the first three days, without turning the whole festival into a single concert.
The weakness is how much practical detail is still unconfirmed. I could not read the shuttle plan, the parking map or the food prices, and the press reports disagree on which day the large daytime walk happens. There is no confirmed headline singer lineup, so this is not the festival to choose for a pop concert. Allow time to check the official notice board before you go, particularly for the air show, which depends on the weather. For a visitor from Seoul, the realistic plan is the morning bus, a full day on the wall and, if the evening programme matters, a night in Gochang.
