Is this one for you?

Who it suits. This suits people who want to eat grilled Hongseong beef and pork outdoors, and who do not mind spending several hours standing, queueing and walking around a fortress-side site. It is a weaker choice if you do not eat meat, since the programme is built around barbecue, or if you want a quiet cultural visit, because free concerts run every evening. Anyone who needs fixed prices and a clear payment system before arriving should know those details were not published yet.

When to go. Plan around the 17:00 concerts, which are reported for each of the four days, and arrive earlier in the afternoon so you can eat before the music starts. The opening day, Thursday October 29, has the trot-singer concert, while Friday and Saturday evenings bring a hip-hop night and an idol-and-band night. The site is listed as open until 21:00, so do not count on late-night eating.

Hongseong’s barbecue festival fills the area around Hongjuseong, the old fortress town in the middle of Hongseong-eup, with charcoal grills, food stalls and an evening concert stage. KTO describes it as a place to try barbecue cultures from home and abroad, built around local livestock: Hongseong hanu beef and handon pork. Regional press says this is the fourth edition and that the organiser is the Hongju Culture and Tourism Foundation.

The 2026 festival runs October 29 to November 1 (Thursday to Sunday) at 27 Amun-gil, Hongseong-eup. Entry is free, and KTO lists operating hours of 10:00-21:00. Note one inconsistency: KTO’s Korean festival portal gives an October 30 start, while the county’s page, KTO’s English record and the news about the opening concert all say October 29. This guide follows the majority and says so, rather than hiding the disagreement.

What you actually do here

The core activity is eating food that has been cooked in front of you. The regional press lists a range of grilling formats: theme-park barbecue, a Hongseong landmark grill, chicken barbecue, K-barbecue, global barbecue, a YouTuber barbecue and a charcoal-grilled hanu zone, plus a Hongseong food zone and a butcher-market grilling section. Before the festival, the foundation held a preview at which a 5.4 m tall grill tower, which can cook 1,000 servings of hanu kebab at a time, was shown for the first time, and reports say 17 themed grill installations will stand on site during the festival.

KTO’s description adds cooking demonstrations by YouTubers and chefs, drone shows, busking and live music, and hands-on activities for families. The press also lists university cultural experiences, craft demonstrations, photo zones and a promotion booth for local farm products. The drone-show dates and times were not published in anything found, so do not plan an evening around one.

Programme and timetable

Every day has an evening concert, reported to begin at 17:00:

  • Thursday, October 29: opening concert with trot singers Jang Min-ho, Jeon Yu-jin and Choi Su-ho among the named performers.
  • Friday, October 30: a hip-hop night with Homies and DJ LaLa.
  • Saturday, October 31: a night with the idol group Cherish and the band Daybreak.
  • Sunday, November 1: a closing concert.

Concerts are reported as free. Exact set times and the order of performers were not published, and a lineup announced weeks earlier can change, so confirm it on the county page.

There is also a national cooking contest on the opening day, October 29, from about 9:00 to 13:30 on the festival’s auxiliary stage. Teams of three cook two dishes using Hongseong beef and pork, and the prize pool is 6.6 million won. Applications closed on October 16, so for visitors it is something to watch, not join. The county’s festival page also lists a Joseon-style “nanrohoe” grilling experience and a garlic-sausage workshop, but the same page still contains programme dates from an earlier year, so verify those before building a day around them.

Tickets, fees and booking

There is no entry ticket. What is unclear is the cost of eating. The reports found describe the grills and food zones but not the price of a portion, whether you buy coupons first, or whether stalls take cards. Because this guide has not been able to verify that, it leaves the card-payment field blank. Bring cash and a card, and expect to learn the system when you arrive.

Fifteen local food businesses were recruited as food-booth operators, with no participation fee, which suggests a local-restaurant focus. The foundation says the aim is to change Hongseong’s image from “the city of barbecue” to “the city of taste”. How many of those stalls end up serving at the festival, and what they sell, is not confirmed.

Getting there without a car

Hongseong sits on the Janghang rail line, and the listings found put the Seoul trip at about two hours from Yongsan Station. Several trains run daily, with train type and speed varying by service, so use Korail to choose a specific one rather than assuming a particular name or fare. Express buses are the alternative, from the Honam wing of the Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Hongseong Bus Terminal, also about two hours in the listings found. One of those listings was an older timetable that counted around 14 daily buses, so confirm current departures.

The festival ground is in the town of Hongseong-eup, around Hongjuseong. This guide has not verified the walking distance from the station or terminal to the entrance, so treat a taxi or the live map as the safe option. Search for the Hongjuseong Fortress or the address 27 Amun-gil, not just “Hongseong”.

Parking, shuttles and traffic control

The county’s festival page links to a parking guide and a shuttle map, but they are image files and their 2026 contents could not be confirmed. An earlier festival’s shuttle plan I found was from 2023 and described separate routes for Naepo New City, Hongseong Station and the sports complex area; that is useful only as a hint that a shuttle network is normal for this event, not as a 2026 timetable. If you drive, open the county page right before you leave, follow the posted parking lots and allow extra time, since I could not confirm traffic-control hours.

Day trip or overnight

A day trip from Seoul is technically possible because the journey is about two hours each way, and the site is open from 10:00 to 21:00. The deciding factor is your return transport after the evening concert, which this guide has not checked. Look up the last train and bus for your exact date before you commit. This guide does not claim the festival requires an overnight stay.

If you do want to stay, Chungwoon University is opening its campus as a free campsite from October 30 to November 1 for the third year. The reported amenities are showers, toilets, sinks, power outlets and a free shuttle to the festival. Reservations open October 19 at 10:00 and are first-come, first-served through the university’s website; reports say earlier years filled within an hour. No hotel is recommended here, because rates and availability were not verified.

Food on site and nearby

The festival is the food programme: the grills and zones listed above are why people come. The regional product to know is Hongseong beef and pork, which KTO names as the base of the barbecue. If you spend time in the county beyond the festival, Gwangcheon is known for cave-aged salted shrimp, which the county’s own tourism pages promote. Neither of these is a guarantee about a particular stall’s menu.

Vegetarians should plan on limited choices, since no vegetarian programme was reported. Allergy information and halal or vegetarian options were not found, so ask at each stall.

Honest assessment

The festival’s strength is a simple, concentrated idea: a free outdoor meal-and-music event set in a historic fortress area, in a county whose beef and pork it actually promotes. The free evening concerts, with a different style of music each night, give it a reason to stay past dinner, and the campus campsite is a real option for people who do not want to leave at night.

Its weaknesses are mostly about missing information. Prices, payment method, shuttle timetable, drone-show dates and set times were not available when this guide was written, and the official-site link that KTO’s portal shows belongs to another event, so it should be ignored. If you cannot tolerate uncertainty, wait until the days before the festival and re-read the county page. The photographs here show the fortress wall as it looks in ordinary conditions, not the festival; the main image is an illustration.

Local specialties to try

Hongseong hanu beef and handon pork (홍성한우·한돈)

KTO's description of the festival names Hongseong's livestock, hanu (Korean beef) and handon (Korean pork), as the base of its barbecue, and Hongseong County's English tourism pages list Hanwoo among the area's famous foods. This is the regional product the festival is built around, not a promise about any one stall's menu or price.

Gwangcheon cave-aged salted shrimp

Gwangcheon cave-aged salted shrimp (광천토굴새우젓)

Salted shrimp (saeu-jeot) aged in caves around Gwangcheon is one of Hongseong County's best-known products; the county's English tourism pages describe the cave ageing and the area hosts its own salted-shrimp and dried-laver festival. It is a county specialty to look for in the market town of Gwangcheon, not something confirmed to be sold at this festival.

Questions worth asking

Does the Hongseong Global BBQ Festival start on October 29 or October 30?

October 29 to November 1, 2026. Hongseong County's festival page, KTO's English record and several news reports of the opening concert and the cooking contest all give October 29 as the first day. KTO's Korean festival portal lists an October 30 start, and the university campsite opens October 30, so check the county page again just before you travel if your plans hinge on the first day.

Is the festival free?

Entry is free. The grilled food is not described as free, and the 2026 prices and payment method (cash, card or coupons) had not been published, so carry some cash as a precaution and confirm on the county page.

Who is performing, and when?

Press reports give 17:00 concerts each day: October 29 an opening concert with Jang Min-ho, Jeon Yu-jin and Choi Su-ho among others; October 30 a hip-hop night with Homies and DJ LaLa; October 31 with the idol group Cherish and the band Daybreak; and November 1 a closing concert. Individual set times and order were not published, so treat the 17:00 start as the earliest you need to be there.

Can I camp near the festival?

Chungwoon University says it will open its campus as a free campsite from October 30 to November 1, with showers, power outlets and a free shuttle to the festival grounds. Reservations open on October 19 at 10:00 on a first-come basis through the university's website, and earlier years reportedly filled within an hour. Capacity and rules were not stated.

How do I get to Hongseong from Seoul?

Trains from Yongsan Station and express buses from the Seoul Express Bus Terminal both take roughly two hours according to the timetable listings found. Search the exact departure on Korail or the bus booking sites for your date, then take a taxi or local bus from Hongseong Station or the bus terminal to the Hongjuseong area.

Is there parking or a festival shuttle?

The county's festival page carries parking and shuttle maps, but their contents for 2026 could not be read as text and no dated 2026 shuttle plan was confirmed. Open the county page shortly before you go and do not rely on a previous year's lot list.
