Masan Gagopa Chrysanthemum Festival 2026

The essentials first: whether it is open, what it costs, how hard it is to reach and what to expect if you do not speak Korean.

Is this one for you?

Who it suits. This suits anyone who likes flower displays and wants a free, walkable waterfront site with food stalls and evening shows. It is a weaker choice if you want a quiet visit: last year's same-period visitor count was about 860,000 and the city is aiming higher, so the paths fill up. It also gives you little if you are only interested in the opening-night entertainers, since the main show is one evening of nine.

When to go. The displays are open 10:00-22:00, so a late-afternoon arrival lets you see the flowers in daylight and stay for the lighting. A press-quoted specialist suggests going from the middle of the festival onward, because the late-autumn heat may delay some blooms. On weekdays the free shuttle from Masan Station is reported to stop at 18:00, so an evening visit then means a taxi or your own car.

The Masan Gagopa Chrysanthemum Festival is the Changwon city government’s main autumn event, run since 2000 to show off Masan’s chrysanthemums and boost their sales. The local background is specific. According to the Korea Tourism Organization, Masan is where commercial chrysanthemum farming began in Korea in 1961, when six farms near Hoewon-dong started growing them, and where the country first exported the flowers to Japan, in 1972. This year is the 26th edition, and the theme is “Chrysanthemums embrace the autumn sea”.

The 2026 dates are 31 October to 8 November, nine days, and the grounds are open 10:00-22:00 each day. Entry is free. The festival is spread across three sites on Masan’s waterfront: 3.15 Marine Nuri Park, which is the main venue, Happo Waterside Park, and the Masan Marine New City area. The registered address is 46-3 Wollam-dong 1-ga, Masanhappo-gu, Changwon.

What you actually do here

The core of the festival is a long waterside walk past chrysanthemum displays. The city says about 100,000 plants are used, and the Seoul Shinmun reports eight themed display zones at the main venue. The festival leans on the sea as a backdrop, and KTO’s own description says visitors can see “chrysanthemum artworks, performances and food together against the backdrop of the sea”.

KTO’s listing also mentions a chrysanthemum bonsai exhibition, a wedding photo zone, an AI experience booth and hands-on programmes. Maeil Shinmun reports one display plant carrying 1,540 blooms on a single stem, which it says holds a Guinness record; that is a press claim I could not check against Guinness. Because the displays are living plants, the specialist quoted by Maeil advises going from mid-festival onward in case the late-autumn warmth delays some blooms. Nobody can promise peak colour on a particular day, and this guide does not.

Programme and timetable

The one fully scheduled evening is the opening ceremony on Saturday 31 October. The official city page gives this running order: pre-show performances and a video from 18:00, the ceremony from 19:00, a multimedia fireworks show from 19:30 to 19:42, and invited singers from 19:43 to 21:00. The page names the performers, but I have not repeated the names here because I could not check how they are written in English.

Beyond the opening, KTO lists these main programme items: the chrysanthemum exhibition, a multimedia fireworks show, a sea-front nakhwa display, a chrysanthemum makeup contest and the Gukhyang song contest. The sea-front nakhwa (floating sparks over the water) is new this year and reported for Wednesday 4 November at 19:00, in front of 3.15 Marine Nuri Park. Maeil Shinmun says it uses more than 1,500 nakhwa rods. The new chrysanthemum makeup contest is on 7 November at 18:30 on the main stage, according to Gukje News.

Side programmes include an Indie Music Festa, performances by local artists, a wreath competition, chrysanthemum dance cheerleading and autumn cinema. I found no dates or times for these, so plan around the dated items above and treat the rest as things you may stumble on. A press mention of a drone show comes from a 2025 listing, and I found nothing confirming one for 2026.

Tickets, passes and food

There is no admission charge at any of the three sites. Two optional schemes are tied to local shops. The Herald reports a Chrysanthemum Pass at 12,900 won that gives discounts at 36 existing shops plus up to three festival booths, with 2,000 won off at each booth. Separately, the city is running a free coupon book that KBS says covers 68 shops, including the Masan Fish Market; you get it online or through the QR code on the event leaflet. Neither is required. If you will not eat or shop nearby, you gain nothing from either.

Food at the festival is run as “food places” at each site. The Herald reports 15 booths at the Marine New City site, with chefs from a TV cooking show, and says any booth caught overcharging will be removed immediately. No 2026 menu or price list was available, so budget by checking prices on the spot. Segye mentions nine temporary toilets, so plan your stops accordingly.

For something beyond festival stalls, Masan’s best-known dish is agujjim, a spicy braise of anglerfish with bean sprouts and minari. Changwon’s culture encyclopedia traces it to about 1964 in Odongdong, a neighbourhood next to the fish market in the same district as the festival. Masan is also the area for Jindong sea squirt (miduduk), a registered geographical-indication seafood from Jindong-myeon, Masanhappo-gu. I did not check which restaurants serve either, so ask locally and avoid any assumption about prices.

Getting there without a car

The simplest route from Seoul is a KTX to Masan Station. One aggregator gives the fastest trip as 2 hours 59 minutes with about 13 daily trains, and another puts the average near 2 hours 55 minutes. These are aggregator figures, so look up the exact train on Korail. The alternative is the express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Masan, which listings put at roughly 3 hours 55 minutes to 4 hours 7 minutes, with 26 departures a day. That is a good deal slower than the train.

From Masan Station, the festival’s free shuttle is the intended link to the site. I could not find a verified walking time or fare for the local leg, so I do not give one. If the shuttle is not running, set 3.15 Marine Nuri Park (3·15해양누리공원) as your destination in a Korean map app and take a taxi.

Parking, shuttles and traffic control

The city says it has arranged 5,500 parking spaces across the three sites, 1,000 more than last year. Where each lot is and whether any charge a fee for 2026 was not confirmed, so check the official notice before driving. Parking will be tight on weekends and on opening night, given that last year’s same-period attendance was about 860,000 and the city is aiming for 900,000.

On the free shuttle, Maeil Shinmun reports that it runs from Masan Station and stops at 18:00 on weekdays, which leaves evening visitors without that link. Other press summaries say weekend service runs later and adds a route from the Masan Fish Market, with buses every 30 minutes. Last year’s published arrangement had the same shape, and I could not confirm the 2026 times against an official notice, so treat all of this as provisional. A shuttle that stops at 18:00 matters if you come for the 19:00 sea-front show on 4 November, because that is a weekday.

Day trip or overnight

A day trip from Seoul is possible but tight. With about three hours each way by KTX and grounds open until 22:00, you can spend a daylight afternoon there, but you probably cannot stay until closing: one aggregator lists the last Masan-to-Seoul KTX at 21:43. I did not confirm that against Korail, so check the actual last train before you commit. If you want the fireworks or the sea-front show, an overnight stay is the safer plan.

I did not check hotel availability or prices and do not recommend a specific place to stay. The festival sites are along the waterfront in Masanhappo-gu, so choose accommodation by how you will get back after dark rather than by distance to Masan Station alone.

Honest assessment

The festival is free and the setting is a real asset: flower beds laid out along a seafront walk, with the sea behind them. The programme is broad rather than deep, and most of what it offers is walk-through displays and stalls, with a handful of dated evening shows. If you come for the flowers and treat the shows as a bonus, the free entry and the waterside layout are hard to fault.

The weak points are practical. Crowds will be large, the evening shuttle arrangement looks thin on weekdays, and several side events have no published times. The hero image is from an earlier edition and the Korea Tourism Organization photos may be too, so they show the general look of the festival rather than a verified 2026 layout. Come in the second half of the run if you want the best chance of full bloom, arrive in the afternoon so you can see the flowers in daylight, and check the official page for any last-minute changes before you travel.

Local specialties to try

Masan agujjim (spicy braised anglerfish) (마산 아구찜)

Changwon's Digital Culture Encyclopedia describes agujjim as a Masan dish of dried anglerfish with bean sprouts, minari and chili seasoning, first prepared around 1964 near the fish market in Odongdong, which is still the area most associated with it. The photo shows an agujjim plate from Seoul's Sinsa-dong agujjim street to illustrate the dish; it was not taken in Masan.

Questions worth asking

Is the Masan Gagopa Chrysanthemum Festival free?

Yes. KTO and the city list entry as free, and press coverage confirms there is no admission fee. Food, drinks and experience booths are separate purchases. An optional 12,900-won Chrysanthemum Pass for discounts is reported by the Herald, but you do not need it to enter.

When are the fireworks?

The official opening-ceremony page lists a multimedia fireworks show on Saturday 31 October from 19:30 to 19:42, followed by invited singers from 19:43 to 21:00. A separate first-time sea-front nakhwa show (floating sparks over the water) is reported for Wednesday 4 November at 19:00, in front of 3.15 Marine Nuri Park.

Is there a free shuttle, and until when does it run?

Korean press reports a free shuttle from Masan Station, and the Maeil Shinmun says it stops at 18:00 on weekdays. A weekend route from the Masan Fish Market and a 30-minute interval are also reported but were not confirmed on an official notice. Check the city's notice before you travel.

How many parking spaces are there?

The city says 5,500 spaces across the three festival sites, 1,000 more than last year. The lot-by-lot list and any paid-parking rules for 2026 were not confirmed, so check the official notice if you plan to drive.

Can I do it as a day trip from Seoul?

On the timetables checked, the KTX takes about three hours each way and the site is open until 22:00, so a day trip is possible but leaves a limited evening. One aggregator lists the last Masan-to-Seoul KTX at 21:43, which is before closing, so check the exact train on Korail before choosing.

Who can enter the chrysanthemum makeup contest?

Applications closed on 25 October and the ten finalists compete on 7 November at 18:30 on the main stage at 3.15 Marine Nuri Park, according to Gukje News. As a visitor you can simply watch.
