Peace On: Dam in Gyeongju 2026

The essentials first: whether it is open, what it costs, how hard it is to reach and what to expect if you do not speak Korean.

About 2 h 15 m by KTX, plus about 30 min by local bus or taxiTake a KTX from Seoul Station to Gyeongju Station (formerly Singyeongju, in Geoncheon-eup on the western edge of the city). From there, city bus 60 or 61 runs to the Cheomseongdae stop, which the organisers list as a one-minute walk from the venue; a taxi is the faster alternative. Check Korail for the exact train.

Is this one for you?

Who it suits. This suits families with children and anyone already in Gyeongju that weekend who wants a free hour or two of games, crafts and short outdoor stage acts beside Cheomseongdae. It is a weaker choice if you want a traditional festival atmosphere, food stalls or a big headline show, since this is a Ministry of Unification outreach event built around a cartoon character and stamp-collecting. The official programme page I checked is written in Korean only, so non-Korean speakers should expect to rely on gestures and a translation app.

When to go. Come for the 11:00 opening, when the farmers' band performs and the stations are least busy, rather than drifting in late. The Silla-costume coupon is limited to the first 200 people, and the organisers' own suggested route does not reach the costume stage until the 16:00-17:00 slot, so if the costume is the goal, start collecting stamps early. The coupon is stated as valid on 7 and 8 November, which may let you use it the next day.

Peace On: Dam is a Ministry of Unification outreach event built around peace and unification, not a traditional festival. The Gyeongju edition is titled “경주에 평화온:담” on the official page and was registered with the Korea Tourism Organization as a second-half 2026 event. The ministry ran the same format earlier in the year in Dongtan, Hwaseong, on 30 May. In Gyeongju it sits on the lawn next to Cheomseongdae, the stone observatory from the Silla period, in Hwangnam-dong.

The confirmed date is Saturday 7 November 2026, 11:00-17:00, with free admission. KTO’s English record files the event under Gyeonggi-do, but the address, the Korean record and the official page all place it in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

What you actually do here

The event is a set of drop-in stations rather than one programme you sit through. The organisers’ character, a cartoon “peace guide” called Kkukku, runs through all of them, and the official page lists the activities:

  • Peace Team: hockey and football missions where you score points.
  • Peace Travel Gate: a storytelling activity that ends with making a bead pen shaped like the Korean Peninsula.
  • Peace Escape Room: three missions to complete.
  • Peace Hwarang Training Camp: table tennis, a kicking game and ring toss.
  • Eco-bag stamping: you stamp a design and add a peace message to a tote bag.
  • Wind chime making: the chime is modelled on the Manpasikjeok, a flute from Silla legend.
  • Puzzle and wappen-keyring stations, plus craft sessions with ten groups of young Gyeongju artists. Two named on the official page are a mother-of-pearl keyring and a leather keyring.
  • A tea-blending experience described as “peace in a cup”.
  • A games zone with a stepper game, a stopwatch challenge, an OX quiz and a photo booth.

Participation works through stickers. You collect the character’s stickers by joining activities. With four kinds of stickers you get one capsule-prize draw. With all seven kinds and a satisfaction survey you get a draw plus a coupon for a one-hour silla-costume experience. The costume coupons are limited to the first 200 people. The page says the coupon is valid on 7 and 8 November.

Programme and timetable

Six local acts perform for half an hour each on an outdoor stage, according to the official page:

12:00-12:30Urban Picnicvocal group
13:00-13:30Summer Night Lawnacoustic guitar, piano and mixed vocals

15:00-15:30Magic Troupe Dachaemagic and theatre
16:00-16:30Cheongcheongtraditional music and percussion, with audience clapping

The organisers also publish a suggested route. It starts with the opening performance at 11:00, moves to the games zone at noon, breaks for lunch and the acoustic set at 13:00, and sets aside 14:00-15:00 for crafts. The magic show and capsule draw come at 15:00-16:00, and the costume experience at 16:00-17:00. The page says early-November days in Gyeongju tend to be cool and clear, with chilly mornings and evenings, and recommends layers, a charger, water and a bag for crafts you make.

Tickets, fees and booking

KTO lists the event as free and no booking is mentioned. I did not find any per-activity price, and the official page does not say whether craft materials cost extra. The stamp-and-coupon scheme is described as a reward for taking part, with no purchase mentioned. The contact for questions is the Ministry of Unification at 02-6958-7225, which is the number both KTO records give.

Getting there without a car

Direct KTX trains run from Seoul Station to Gyeongju Station. It was called Singyeongju Station until 28 December 2023, and some maps and older guides still use the old name. It sits in Geoncheon-eup at the western edge of Gyeongju, not in the old centre. Two independent guides put the ride at roughly two hours, between 1 h 55 m and 2 h 15 m depending on the train. Check the specific service in Korail for your date.

From the station, city bus 60 or 61 reaches the Cheomseongdae stop (01317), which the official page lists as the closest stop, a one-minute walk from the venue. Travel guides put the bus ride at about 30 minutes, and a taxi at 15 to 20 minutes. Other stops nearby, per the official page, are Cheonmachong (4 minutes’ walk, towards the Hwangridan-gil area) and the Wolseong-dong community centre (5 minutes, buses 15, 16 and 61).

An express bus from Seoul takes around 3.5 to 4 hours according to the same guides, so the train is the practical choice. Once you are in the centre, Cheomseongdae and the Daereungwon tomb area are walkable on foot.

Parking, shuttles and traffic control

The official page lists four lots near the venue:

  • Cheonmachong roadside lot, 103-2 Hwangnam-dong: 1 minute on foot, described as the most convenient.
  • Daereungwon public lot, 495 Hwangnam-dong: 3 minutes.
  • Gyeongju Ssamsae-district temporary lot, 189 Wonhwa-ro: 6 minutes, described as having plenty of space.
  • Daereungwon Hwangnam-district public lot, 165-2 Hwangnam-dong: 11 minutes, close to Hwangridan-gil.

No shuttle service, road closure or traffic-control notice had been published when I checked. The event is on a Saturday and no source gives an attendance estimate, so allow extra time. The Ssamsae temporary lot is the one the page describes as spacious.

Day trip or overnight

Door to door, Seoul to the venue is roughly two and three-quarter hours by KTX and bus before any waiting. The event runs 11:00-17:00, so a day trip is feasible in terms of daylight. I did not verify the last KTX back to Seoul, so I am not claiming that a same-day return works. Check the exact return train in Korail before you buy the outbound ticket.

The coupon’s validity on 8 November is the only sign of a second day anywhere in the official material. Do not book an extra night for more activities unless the official page confirms that day.

Food on site and nearby

No food stalls or menus are listed on the official page, so assume you will eat elsewhere. The official page says the Cheonmachong bus stop, a 4-minute walk from the venue, is also close to Hwangridan-gil, so that street is the obvious place to look for a meal. I have not checked individual restaurants.

For something specific to Gyeongju, KTO’s travel article describes Hwangnam-ppang, a round red-bean pastry first baked in 1939 in Hwangnam-dong, as a must-try. It also names chalbori-ppang, a chewy barley pancake with a lighter bean filling that launched in 1986 and is made from Gyeongju-grown glutinous barley. Both are sold widely in the city and are packaged to carry home. They are regional snacks, not a claim about what the event itself will serve.

Honest assessment

This is a modest, free, family-oriented outreach event on an open lawn. What it offers beyond a normal Cheomseongdae visit is a stamp-collecting trail, a few short stage acts and a lot of hands-on crafts. The setting is the real draw: you are beside one of Gyeongju’s best-known monuments, with other sights nearby.

Its weaknesses are practical. The programme is promoted in Korean, there is no published rain policy, and no source says how crowded it will be or how fast the 200 costume coupons go. Much of the content is aimed at children and families, and the peace-and-unification theme comes through a character and games rather than any exhibit about the subject.

If you are already in Gyeongju on 7 November, it is worth an hour or two. As the only reason for a five-hour round trip from Seoul, it is a harder case. For a first visit, put Cheomseongdae, Daereungwon and Hwangridan-gil first, and treat the event as an extra.

Local specialties to try

Hwangnam-ppang (Hwangnam bread) (황남빵)

A small, round red-bean pastry first baked in 1939 by Choi Yeong-hwa in Hwangnam-dong, the same neighbourhood as this event. KTO's travel article describes the filling as roughly 70 percent of the pastry. It is widely sold across Gyeongju, including at train stations, so you do not need to buy it in Hwangnam-dong itself.

Questions worth asking

Is Peace On: Dam in Gyeongju free?

The Korea Tourism Organization lists it as free. The official page gives no ticket or reservation requirement. It does not say whether any craft activity charges for materials, so do not assume every activity is covered.

What is the date, and is it also on 8 November?

KTO's record and its festival portal both give Saturday 7 November 2026, 11:00-17:00. The official page mentions 8 November only for the validity of the silla-costume coupon, so treat 7 November as the one confirmed event day and check the official page before assuming a second day.

How do I get there from Seoul without a car?

Take a KTX from Seoul Station to Gyeongju Station, about two hours. Travel guides give roughly 1 h 55 m to 2 h 15 m depending on the train. Then take city bus 60 or 61 to the Cheomseongdae stop, about 30 minutes, or a taxi. The official page lists the stop as a one-minute walk from the venue.

Where can I park?

The official page lists four nearby lots with walking times: the Cheonmachong roadside lot (1 minute), the Daereungwon public lot (3 minutes), the Gyeongju Ssamsae-district temporary lot on Wonhwa-ro (6 minutes, described as spacious) and the Daereungwon Hwangnam-district public lot (11 minutes). No event shuttle or road-closure notice had been published.

How do I get the Silla costume experience?

Collect cartoon-character stickers by joining activities. With seven kinds of stickers and the satisfaction survey you get one capsule-prize draw plus a coupon for a one-hour silla-costume experience. The costume coupons are limited to the first 200 people. The organisers say the coupon is valid on 7 and 8 November.

What happens if it rains?

No rain policy was published on the official page or in KTO's record. Check the official page on the morning of 7 November before travelling.
