Is this one for you?

Who it suits. This suits travellers who want a regional market festival built around eating: rice soup, noodles and a large chrysanthemum display, all in one walkable town centre and with no admission charge. It is a weaker choice if you want a fixed, advertised headline concert or a quiet, scenic day, since the venue is a working market and the published programme is a list of activity strands rather than a timetable. Anyone who dislikes queues for food should expect them at a four-day free event.

When to go. The listed operating window is 10:00-20:00, and the chrysanthemum displays are photographed both in daylight and lit up at night, so a late-afternoon arrival that carries into the evening lets you see both. No crowd figures have been published, so the day you choose is a judgement call: the weekend (24-25 October) is the more likely time for queues. Check the stage schedule for the day you choose, because the main stage runs a different programme each day.

Yesan Market in Chungcheongnam-do hosts a four-day festival that turns a working traditional market into an eating and flower-viewing event. The name comes from a pun on three words that each end in guk: chrysanthemum (gukhwa), rice soup (gukbap) and noodles (guksu). The Korea Tourism Organization describes the festival as built around exactly those three themes, with a range of food and a look at the culture of Yesan Market.

The 2026 edition is the 10th, and it falls in the year the market marks its 100th anniversary. It runs Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October 2026. KTO’s record, its festival portal and the Korean listing agree on the dates, on free admission and on operating hours of 10:00-20:00. The venue is the Yesan Market area, listed at 2 Yesansijang-gil in Yesan-eup, with Yesan County as organiser and the Yesan County Development Committee as co-organiser.

What you actually do here

The central activity is walking through the market and eating. The festival’s own programme is organised into strands rather than a conventional timetable. The one you will notice first is the Samguk bucket list: ten things the organisers say you should do at the festival, taken in stages as a participatory route through the site. Think of it as a guided checklist for first-timers rather than a ticketed attraction, though the sources do not say how stamps or rewards work, so ask at an information point on arrival.

Food is the second strand. The Korean listing calls it a local-resident food programme on three themes: the samguk theme itself, the market’s “eight flavours”, and local specialties. The county adds that its local-food shop takes part with sales and tastings of regional produce, and reports mention a gift for larger purchases. Treat that as shopping, not a free meal. The third strand is the flower display. The listing mentions chrysanthemum exhibitions and photo zones, and the official photographs show them as large, sculpted flowerbeds in the middle of the town’s streets, bright by day and lit at night.

Two more strands are performance. The listing describes an immersive theatre piece staged in the market as a “glocal” showpiece, and a colour-themed main-stage series where each day has its own look. There is also the Yesan Dance Festival, a competition in which dancers from around the country take turns on stage. The stated theme this year is that “the story never ends”, with the slogan “Yesan Jangteo, our story continues”, and the organisers say they are working with young local creators and youth groups.

Programme and timetable

I could not find a published 2026 day-by-day timetable, and I am not going to guess one. What is confirmed is the strand list above, the 10:00-20:00 operating hours and the fact that the main stage changes by day. Which performers appear on which day was not stated in the official listing or in the news reports I checked, which concentrate on the local-food shop and on safety preparations.

That matters because older line-ups for earlier editions are easy to find. Past editions have named singers and run a drone show; none of that is evidence for 2026. If a particular performance is your reason to go, check the festival’s official page or call the county before you buy a ticket for the trip.

One practical reading of the operating window: the festival closes at 20:00, relatively early for a festival that shows its flowers lit at night. Evening visits are therefore short, and a late-afternoon arrival that runs until closing is the best plan if you want both daylight and illumination.

Tickets, fees and booking

There is no admission fee. KTO and the Korean listing both say so, and the 10th-edition news reports do not mention one. That does not mean everything on site is free: stalls sell food and drink, and the county’s local-food shop sells regional produce. No 2026 prices for stalls, tastings or activities were published in the sources I could check.

No advance booking is mentioned for general entry or for the bucket-list route. Keep a card and some cash in your pocket; I did not find a report on which stalls take cards, so do not assume it.

The organiser’s phone number is 041-332-4317 (Yesan County). It is a Korean-language contact, and English support was not checked.

Getting there without a car

Yesan is a small county town in Chungcheongnam-do, and the market is in its centre. Yesan County’s English transport page lists a train from Yongsan Station in Seoul to Yesan Station, taking about two hours, with 16 departures a day from 05:30 to 20:45. Other travel guides give roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, so the difference may depend on the type of train; check the booking screen for the exact service and the return time before you buy.

By express bus, the county page lists services to Yesan from Seoul’s Nambu Terminal (four a day, 07:00-19:00, about two hours), Honam Terminal (five a day, 07:10-20:30, about two hours) and Dong Seoul Terminal (10:35 and 18:30, 2 hours 10 minutes). Wikivoyage mentions a shorter ride from Gangnam Express Bus Terminal at roughly 1 hour 40 minutes. These timetables change; confirm before you go.

For the last leg, Yesan Market is about 10 minutes by taxi from Yesan Station, and city buses 610 and 631 are reported to run from the general bus terminal. Rural buses are infrequent, and festival days may change routes, so taxi is the safer way to arrive on time. Use the Korean address, Yesan-eup, Yesansijang-gil 2, rather than only “Yesan” in your map app.

Parking, shuttles and traffic control

No 2026 shuttle plan, parking list or road-closure map turned up in the official material available. What is documented is that Yesan County treats crowd density as a safety issue: its joint pre-opening inspections, reported by several regional newspapers, covered crowd dispersal, traffic control and parking management, temporary structures, electrical and gas installations, rescue plans, safety staff and a crackdown on illegal night stalls and food hygiene. A joint on-site inspection was planned for 21 October, the day before opening.

Do not rely on parking beside the market. A four-day festival in a market district will close streets and fill nearby lots, and the county has not published the details I could find. Public transport and a taxi from the station remove the problem.

Day trip or overnight

For a Seoul visitor the festival is realistic as a day trip on paper, since the journey takes about two hours each way and the site is open from 10:00 to 20:00. I could not verify the last train or bus back to Seoul on the dates, and the festival closes at 20:00, so check the return before you commit. If you want to see both the daylight displays and the lit-up flowers, an overnight stay in Yesan or a nearby town gives you more margin. I have not verified lodging availability or prices, so no hotel is named here.

Food on site and nearby

The festival’s whole identity is gukbap and guksu, and rice soup and noodles will be the safe choice at the stalls. Beyond that, the specific stall list and prices for 2026 were not published in the sources I could check.

For a regional product that is documented away from the festival stalls, Yesan apples are the county’s best-known farm product. Yesan’s local cultural encyclopedia records large-scale cultivation of new varieties from the 1920s and the designation of the county as an apple export zone in 1995, and the local-food shop’s sales at the festival are reported to include regional produce. If you are visiting in late October, apples are in season, but whether a particular stall sells them is something to check on the day.

Honest assessment

The strongest part of this festival is its venue. A real market, with permanent food stalls, the flower beds in the streets and a main stage set up around them, is a more honest setting than a field with temporary tents. Entry is free, the town is near enough to Seoul for a long day, and the theme gives you a simple route: eat the soup, eat the noodles, look at the flowers.

The weaknesses are informational. As of 19 October the programme was a list of strands without a published day-by-day timetable or line-up, no 2026 parking or shuttle plan was found, and the official page KTO links is a marketing agency’s blog that I could not read. The festival closes at 20:00, so the lit-up evening displays are short. The county’s own safety inspections focus on crowd dispersal, so plan for a busy market rather than an empty one.

Go for the food and the flower displays, arrive in the afternoon, and use the train or bus. Skip it if you want a scenic, uncrowded outing, or if one specific performer is the point of the trip and you have not confirmed that they are on the day you can attend.

Local specialties to try

Yesan apples (예산 사과)

Apples are the county's best-known farm product. Yesan's local cultural encyclopedia records large-scale cultivation of new varieties from the 1920s and the county's designation as an apple export zone in 1995, and Wikivoyage names apples as what Yesan is known for. In 2026 the county's local-food shop is also reported to be selling local produce at the festival. Apples are a regional product, not a promise about what festival stalls will sell.

Questions worth asking

When is the 2026 Yesan Jangteo Three Kingdoms Festival?

It runs from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October 2026 in and around Yesan Market. KTO lists the operating hours as 10:00-20:00 and the fee as free. This is the 10th edition and falls in the year Yesan Market marks its 100th anniversary.

What does the name 'Three Kingdoms' mean?

It is a pun rather than a history theme. Samguk, 'three countries', stands for the three things Yesan puts forward: gukhwa (chrysanthemum), gukbap (rice soup) and guksu (noodles). Each word ends in 'guk', which is how the festival got its name.

Is the festival free?

Entry is free according to KTO and the Korean festival record. Food and drink are bought from stalls, and no 2026 price list for those or for the participatory activities was found, so carry some cash or a card.

How do I get there from Seoul without a car?

Yesan County's transport page lists trains from Yongsan Station to Yesan Station (about two hours, 16 services a day between 05:30 and 20:45) and express buses from Seoul's Nambu, Honam and Dong Seoul terminals (about two hours). Other guides give 1.5 hours for the train. From the station the market is about 10 minutes by taxi. Confirm the live timetable before you travel.

Are the 2026 performers and daily timetable published?

I did not find a verified 2026 line-up or timetable in the official material available. The programme describes colour-themed main-stage performances that change by day, but names no artists. Several older line-ups can be found online; they belong to earlier editions and should not be used.

Where do I park, and is there a shuttle?

No 2026 parking map or shuttle plan was found. County reports say that traffic control, parking management and crowd dispersal were part of the pre-opening safety inspection, with a joint on-site check planned for 21 October. Use public transport if you can, and check the county's notices just before you go.
